Dyscalculia: Impaired Calculating Condition
Tuesday June 24, 2025 9:00am - 9:50am CDT
In this session, we will discuss what dyscalculia is, what it looks like for students, and how to support students.  You will hear from students that struggle with math and how it feels to struggle.  My hope is that  we will bring awareness to Dyscalculia and eventually offer services for Dyscalculia and have early detection so that intervention can begin.

Socratic Showdown: Gamifying Discussions to Differentiate and Deepen Thinking in Math
Tuesday June 24, 2025 2:15pm - 3:05pm CDT
In this session, participants will explore a gamified approach to Socratic Seminars that enhances student engagement, collaboration, and critical thinking. Educators will learn how to implement this structured discussion game to differentiate instruction and encourage deeper reasoning in math.

During Socratic Showdowns, students earn points for critical thinking moves such as citing evidence, asking clarifying questions, multiple representations, and making connections. By combining the principles of the Socratic method with the excitement of competition, this protocol can foster deeper analysis, active participation, and differentiated learning experiences for all learners. The session will provide hands-on experience, including role-playing as students and ideas for designing your own Socratic Showdown experience.

Mathematizing Over Memorizing - The Climb to Fact Fluency in Elementary Mathematics
Thursday June 26, 2025 10:00am - 10:50am CDT
As a math teacher, how many times have you thought, "My students just don't know their basic math facts!"? If your answer was more than one time, join us for this session! During our brief time together, K-5 math teachers will explore how to shift away from an overemphasis on memorization to building true fact fluency through conceptual understanding. Participants will deepen their understanding of the difference between fact fluency and rote memorization and discover how fostering number sense leads to long-term retention and application of basic facts. The session will highlight effective strategies and models—such as number talks, arrays, and decomposition—that promote mathematical reasoning across addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Educators will also analyze common misconceptions about fact fluency and identify ways to adjust instructional practices to build a strong foundation for their students. By the end of the session, teachers will be equipped with practical tools and strategies that empower students to think flexibly and apply their knowledge with confidence.
